Hi Bluedaffodil,

Initially raised ESR/WCC, Barium swallow, various scopes and biopsies. Biopsies are the most definitive and specific in determining whether the IBD is Crohns or Colitis as Crohns has a very unique appearance.

You have indication you might be suffering from a form of IBD?

IBD isn't a single disease - it is a group of diseases.

I'd have a look here:

nacc.org.uk/content/home.asp

Click in IDB Basics on the top menu/row.

There may be other sites.

Meant to add both forms of IBD can be very elusive as far as blood tests are concerned and show everything as 'normal' despite raging symptoms.

Thanks - have had gut problems that rule my life since 06. NHS misdiagnosed as ibs without considering coeliac (I have hashimotos and pernicious anaemia too, plus likely pancreatic exocrine insufficiency).

Last year saw private specialist (highly rated thyroid expert) who was sure it was coeliac or IBD. Since the NHS was useless in conducting coeliac tests, i had already cut out gluten by the time they woke from their slumber. Seemed ok for a few months but now symptoms are back - off and on even when i KNOW i have not had gluten or gluten contamination.

So i think it's IBD. Been fighting for years to see a gastro again but took years to convince nhs they got it wrong in 06. On waiting list now for a gastro who is rated by the private gp i see when i can afford to.

NHS offers no support whatsoever for the malabsorption issues i have as result of chronic diarrhoea, so hoping this gastro will be good and get it right. NHS just doesn't join the dots and understand that vit and min deficiencies impact upon thyroid and general health.

The NHS wears me down more than my diseases do
