Marmetielion, switching to soya milk was just about the worst thing you could possilby have done for your over-all health. Have you never head of the dangers of soya?

Espcially for hypos (I take it you are hypo, most people here are). It is a goitrogen and impedes the thyroid gland's iodine up-take. At a cellular level it impede absorbtion into the cells, making the person more and more hypo. (So if that itch is thyroid-related, it's going to get worse!)

Even if you don't have a thyroid problem, unfermented soya is a carcinogen. It destroys certain essential vitamins, causes birth defects, and does all sorts of other nasty things.

It is NOT a health/y food and I would advise everyone to avoid it - even though that is getting harder and harder in England. Virtually all bread, I've noticed, contains soya flour.

And it tastes so bad!!! I don't understand how anyone can ingest the bloody stuff. lol

Hugs, Grey

Me too. I started supplements B12, iron, selenium, D3 and it has improved since then. It's now mainly my lower legs...

The only thing is I have pernicious anemia too! I have B12 injections every 12 weeks! So it could be a result of either thyroid or B12 illness! Double trouble for me I'm afraid!

When I get hot I itch even more! I also have quite a few patches of granuloma alulare a skin condition mainly associated with diabetes and hiv sufferers. Neither of these apply to me but its also associated with thyroid problems too. I'm sick of going back and forth to doctors now and getting nowhere! Antihisthamines are not working! But I knew they wudnt!

Nothing works for idiopathic urticaria! Mines got better over the years but its still with me, 14 years later!

Hi I have had this for years, attributed to thyroid disease and Eczema, now it is Liver disease as well. However, the first symptom of liver disease is horny finger nails, one to start with. It does not always show on LFT`s,( liver function tests.). I hope that gives you some ideas,if the other suggestions do not help.

Thanx

I don't have horny nails, in fact I hardly have any! They struggle to get to the end of my fingers now! They just flake and break off! Its definately not much fun having underactive thyroid and pernicious anemia!

I have been itching since last summer and 6 weeks ago I developed a rash on my arms and legs. I have since been diagnosed with Eczema, (never had this before in my life) and have read online that if you are not on enough Thyroxine, this can cause it.

I have an appointment with my Dr next week because the creams I was given are not working. I am only on 75mg Thyroxine so will ask him for Thyroid blood tests because I don't feel right on this dose. I feel just the same now as I did before I was put on Thyroxine.

I know what you mean I think I definately need more dosage but I'm always told my blood test results are normal! I have never been given actual results i.e. Figures! And normal for who? I've put so much weight on I am now classed as obese and have read that obese people need more thyroxine than someone who isn't! I'm currently on 100mcgs a day. I have never been to see an endocrinologist either but I'm thinking the time has come to ask to see one as I'm sick of begging for thyroxine.

Hi That is fine, but in that case, after hearing about flaky nails, make sure you are not dehydrated. Try drinking a lot more water and lots of moisturiser. A non allergic one.

Best wishes,

Jackie

The dry flaky nails are all to do with thyroid problem I drink plenty of water and have prescribed moisturiser for my skin and nails. If I'm not getting enuf thyroxine then its all a waste of time. I'm sick of being told everythings normal when it clearly is not.

Hi Oh see only my thyroid now is stable, Hashimotos and I still have these problems. Sorry, I could not help. I guess you are going to just have to insist on blood results with ranges, make sure you also have Free T3 done. Overweight is often due to low free T3, I have to have my FT3 ( script) near the top of the range. T4 Ok if ,as with most people top third. It is possible to pay for your own tests + ranges, from the site.No authorisation needed. Then show them to, hopefully a good doctor!

Best wishes,

Jackie

Thanx for advice

I have never been told wot they test for or what levels I'm at. All I get is normal!! I'm going to ask to be referred to an endocrinologist then perhaps I might get to know more. It just seems that I'm getting fobbed off at the moment. And paying for my own tests might be an option if I get nowhere with docs.

Many thanx jackie

Hi That sounds a good idea. It is not right but sometimes we really have to battle for the best treatment. I know as long history of battles with medics!Do check out the endo before asking for a referral. hospital web sites and individual CV`s on the doc`s. WEB. also ask everyone, who they see but make sure that they do not confuse nice with good, some people I find do.

Best wishes,

Jackie

Try having your parathyroid checked.

Could be overactive.

Try 5000 IU a day of Vitamin D3. Add 500mg to 1000mg of Calcium with Manesium

My consultant told me at 2pm that I had thyroid cancer. My itchy back was really bad so I saw my GP on the way home the same day. He told me I probably had scabies and prescribed cream for my husband and I to use ALL over for the next two days...not a good day at all!

Unsurprisingly the itches did not improve. Then after trying several creams I was prescribed Cetraben which has made all the difference. I use it every day, if I forget the itchy back soon returns. Seems there are so many side effects resulting from thyroid problems, hope you get yours sorted soon.

Hi Gigi,

I am so sorry you must feel devastated.I hope that he also told you what treatment he had in mind.I know a lot of people have had it and recovered really well. It will take a long while to recover from the shock, I am sure. once you know what treatment is in store you will at least, feel a bit more comfortable with it.I find even when expecting bad medical news ,it still gives one a terrible shock.

As for the itching, have you asked to see a Dermatolgist, although I find some better than others at diagnosis.

The very best wishes, let us know how you get on.

Love,

Jackie

Thank you for your kind thoughts. It was a scary time, but fortunately I am fine now - apart from the itches of course!

It appears that the problems resulting from thyroid cancer are easier to fix than the awful effects an under/over active thyroid can cause.

My thoughts are with all of you who struggle to find the appropriate treatment.

Yes. Horribly. For the past few months particularly.

Then I remembered a few things :

1. I have probably had Hashimoto's hypothyroidism for years but since it has never been definitively set in stone, I've danced around the symptoms and not fully addressed the "cure" (treatment).

2. I stopped taking my porcine desiccated capsules (stupidly)

3. I've been gaining weight

4. Total loss of energy

5. Last but not least the horrible itching and strange bumps on my back and shoulders

So. I started taking the thyroid pills again plus something called THYROID SYNERGY by Designs for Health

and another similar product which is made by a compounding pharmacy.

I also seriously laid off gluten which can be the trigger for Hashimoto's.

Bingo. Things started improving within 48 hours.

The itching was like a curse or something. I carried a bamboo back scratcher around with me everywhere. Even to church!

I kept thinking of my dear Granny who was born in the South (Virginia) post the Civil War and was a bit fussy about things like "scratching". She would have died if she had seen my scratching and scritching.

I thank God for natural nutritional supplements and vitamins.

Feeling pretty darn good these days......scratching abated. More energy, too. Contact me if you need info on what supplements I have been taking and where to obtain them.

Yes I would like to know what you used. I have suffered for years but lately it is unbearable.

I'm taking pain meds to help soothe the flair ups .

I sorted itching by doubling my thyroxine for 2 week's the itching stopped and touch wood had been since which is over a year ago when I posted this. I found online information that itching is due to not enough medication! It worked for me.

Yes I have

Yes, yes.......I have terrible itching and I have Hashimoto thyroiditis...which means I have no thyroid. They said a virus attached it and destroyed it??? That was years ago. Recently, I noticed that off and on my scalp itched terribly..gee whiz, I thought I had lice or something!! I looked up thyroiditis because I already knew about brittle fingernails and hair loss......and there is was 'itchy skin' and scalp.

I told my dr about it and all he said was "Yes, itching scalp does happen." Hello, I don't need it comfirmed. I need to know what to do!! @@

Then things got worse and really weird........every night after I fall asleep, at some point in the night, I wake up itching all over ........almost as though a flea is in my bed jumping from one spot to another to another........very rapidly. Nope I don't have fleas and I don't have bed bugs and I don't know why it happens only at night. A bamboo scratcher has become my best friend!!

After a bit, it all stops suddenly.......until the next night. My thyroid test have been lower and lower, though I'm on Synthroid. Dr keeps upping the dose. I guess I should be grateful that it only occurs at night rather then constantly throughout the day.

I don't think there's anything that can be done except to treat the symtom not the cause. :( Best of luck to you! <3

I’ve been really itchy the last few nights. I’m so glad I found you all. I’m autoimmune hypothyroid and still coming to terms with the whole thing. Especially the weight gain. I’m told I have a very small thyroid too. It was me that diagnosed myself when I looked at my blood results on the dr’s pc. I’d probably had it for a couple of years, because I was so tired. Go put it down to my age. I’m itchy tonight too. Like pinpricks under my skin. If I scratch, little round bumps appear. I’m used to smooth skin. I’m finding it hard to deal with the ‘ups’ and ‘downs’. I ended up doubling my meds the other day because the pins and needles and cramps got too much to bear. It did help to be fair. I’m going to keep you lot in my favourites so I can find you again. I thought I was going mad. X
